Every year the U.S environmental protection agency recognized an appliance that is worth of praise in its commitment to environmentalism and being environmentally conscious. To receive this honor is nothing short of one of the top marketing ploys you can receive given the marketability of green products today.
This year they selected the Whirlpool corporation in Benton Harbor for the 2016 ENERGY STAR partner of the year. This is a great honor and not easy to come by at all, first of all it can’t just be that the products you are making is greener than its competition in terms of performance and quality, but it has to be green from start to finish. That is to say, the way the raw materials are gathered and sorted, the way it is assembled and fabricated, and the way it is packaged and relieved all must be taken into consideration when assigning this award.
What pushed them over the edge this year. We that pushed them over the edge this year comes in as a result of several innovations they have made over the last few years in regards to their laundry system. In regards to their home clothing dryers they have made leaps and bounds in both the energy used, and time spent in drying their whole load of cloths.
This is a somewhat funny and perhaps ironic awarding considering that it is giving an award to something that is an impractical alternative to something that is extremely practical and even carbon neutral. The alternative is of coarse, if you were to just hand out your cloths on a line. It is funny that the EPA is awarding some think like this and many are considering if they should have just picked a more progressive innovation that set the bar higher and made people do things that were more innovative and beautiful in this regard. However, we should give credit where credit is due. Let’s be honest most people are never going hang their cloths on a line, I know it, you know it, the American people know it. So if we are working within this paradigm as being the standard then we can see that what they are actually doing is fairly genius in their new products. For instance the dry setting on their new models are saving up to 73 percent of energy when compared to traditional dryers of the same size and performance. That is an insane amount of energy and is actually a fairly promising feature when we look at the fact that in 30 years where will likely be an additional billion people on the earth. The game has to change or else we are going to be played by it. Meaning if we do not drastically overhaul the way to use resources and revamp our energy infrastructure we are likely to run into so serious trouble. That said Whirlpool is on to some promising things and it will be interesting to see where they go from here and if they can raise the bar next year.
